Todd Monaghan, 2014, 36"/64"/1.5", gesso, acrylic and egg shells on canvas.
China (one of two by this name, this is the smaller, China 102 is the larger) is part of a series of black & white paintings with a hint of cream in them. The series was commissioned by gallerist Bill Lowe for his Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This piece features a simple bush. The entire series takes the minimalist marks and color of the black and white series and incorporates the color/shade "cream" into them. This series of paintings brings a yellow glow to the otherwise black and white series. Monaghan used egg shells in this series to give the work a deep textural feel.
