Todd Monaghan, 2011, 42", 48", 1", acrylic, pastel and polyurethane on cardboard mounted on bendy ply.
Warriors was what Monaghan refers to a throw away work. The painting was started in 1998 as a pastel sketch on a piece of cardboard that was floor protection. The cardboard shuffled around the studio until it resurfaced in 2010. Monaghan was in a new relationship and revisited the sketch with fresh eyes. Look just off center into the piece and you will see the face of a Warrior Chief, his hood draped over his head, looking out to the sun. There are various other faces and characters in the piece which is signed with only a T on the front of it. The number 10 represents when the piece was finished, 98 is when it was started.
It was mounted on Masonite board in 2011 mounted in 2011.
