Todd Monaghan, 2021, 27"/55"/1", gesso, oil pastels and egg shells on canvas
This diptych black and white, the fourth of the Rehoboth Beach Residency Series, is part of Monaghan's continuing black and white series that was initiated in 2012. This series, inspired by American painter Franz Kline and the Japanese Calligraphy painters explores minimalism in both mark making and them. This piece is a reflection on the figure 8, the symbol for infinity. It is also a face with a pair of spectacles on it, hence the name, Infinity Spectacles. The piece, a diptych, is a continuation of a series of diptych black and whites including "Cattails" and "A Bend In Time".. This piece, and all of the pieces in the series, is made with egg shells and gesso and is an abstraction that explores space, light and energy flow.
