Todd Monaghan, 2010, 56.25"/74.25"/1.5", gesso, oil, pastel, sand and egg shells on canvas.
This work is inspired by and dedicated to German artist Anselm Kiefer whom Monaghan's work has been compared to early in his career. One of Monaghan's New York dealer's asked him to create a series of paintings dedicated and inspired by Kiefer. This piece and another entitled "3 Orbs" are the result of this work. This view is from looking down Central Park's Bethesda Fountain, one of Monaghan's favorite places. To the left is the East River, to the right is the Hudson. The central path takes the viewer straight up to the heavens.
The piece is heavily textured with Monaghan's familiar egg shells as well as sand, dirt and various other natural elements.
